2023 Toyota Sienna XLE Woodland Edition

The Toyota Sienna is a top pick for family travel, seamlessly combining functionality and style. With a capacity for up to eight passengers, this streamlined minivan showcases sliding side doors and a powerful hybrid powertrain, solidifying its position as a formidable contender among other family vehicles like the Chrysler Pacifica, Honda Odyssey, and the Kia Carnival.

DESIGN

The 2023 Sienna features carefully crafted contours that smoothly navigate its roomy interiors, culminating in a unique and refined profile. This skilled workmanship not only fulfills the pragmatic requirements of accommodating passengers but also enhances its practical and aesthetically pleasing qualities.

In an unconventional move for minivans, the Sienna challenges norms with its striking aesthetics. While some may view its design as intricate, there’s an undeniable allure in the way the fenders protrude, the LED headlights seamlessly blend into the grille like a mask, and the sturdy rear fenders remain resolute, adorned with LED accents.

While it might face potential criticisms for its abundant stylization, its captivating design undeniably grabs your eye. Opt for the understated XLE, our test van, or Limited models for a more modest charm.

Moving inside, while it doesn’t push the boundaries to the extreme, it holds its own with unique features. The raised center console establishes a clear divide between the front passengers, adorned with carefully crafted trim that brings to mind the texture of wood grain.

During our week-long test drive of the Sienna XLE, we were fond of the sleek touchscreen suspended over a narrow control panel, which evoked a futuristic ambiance reminiscent of electric vehicles. It’s worth mentioning that our test vehicle came equipped with the optional Rear Seat Entertainment System, an additional feature priced at $1,415.

This feature includes a high-definition 1080 entertainment center with an 11.6-inch display, HDMI input, a convenient remote, and two wireless headphones. For the average van owner, this system offers a valuable solution for keeping passengers entertained during long journeys, making it an ideal companion for family outings and everyday commutes.

PERFORMANCE

The Sienna is equipped with an all-wheel-drive system that stands out for its clever design. It features a third electric motor positioned at the rear axle, operating independently from the front axles. This unique setup is often referred to as “through the road” AWD, effectively combining the power of a gasoline engine at the front with electric power at the rear.

While the system’s approach isn’t revolutionary, it offers a straightforward and efficient performance. The Sienna’s 4-cylinder engine, working in harmony with its electric motor and battery pack, channels power through a CVT that expertly manages the power distribution.

With a combined output of 245 horsepower, the Sienna doesn’t compromise on low-end power, courtesy of its hybrid assistance. Nonetheless, it isn’t designed for lightning-fast acceleration, potentially leading to a perceived lag, particularly when speeding up on the highway.

Furthermore, the Sienna impresses with its finely tuned steering and adept body control, making for confident handling that even surpasses many of Toyota’s SUV models. Additionally, the vehicle stands out for its dependable brakes with precise modulation, a feature not commonly found in Toyota hybrids.

VERDICT

The manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of the Sienna XLE stands at $47,695. Taking into account additional options and delivery charges, the final total amounts to $50,985.

Compeition

While Honda’s appealing Odyssey impresses, some may feel a slight letdown due to the absence of an all-wheel-drive option, leaving a desire for more.

The Kia Carnival effortlessly combines value with an air of sophistication and grace.

If you prefer not to go the van route but still have your eye on a Toyota, the Highlander might catch your attention. Resembling a minivan, it does have a less user-friendly interior and a design that could pose challenges in crowded parking lots.

Chrysler’s Pacifica takes the lead by introducing a plug-in hybrid model, although the fuel consumption of the mandatory V-6 engine in the all-wheel-drive models might be a concern.
