2024 BMW X2 unveiled: Up to 312 hp, electric iX2 set for select markets

BMW has introduced the updated X2 compact crossover in the U.S., which includes both the X2 xDrive28i and the more powerful X2 M35i xDrive boasting 312 horsepower. Notably, an electric iX2 variant is in the works for select global markets, but it won’t be available in the U.S.

The official debut of the X2 is set to take place at the 2023 Tokyo Auto Show this month, with its release as a 2024 model scheduled for March. The previous X2 generation, launched in 2018, achieved significant global sales, exceeding 380,000 units. The new X2 surpasses its predecessor in terms of performance, technology, and interior space.

Sharing its platform with the 2023-redesigned X1, both models utilize BMW’s FAAR platform designed for front-wheel-drive vehicles.

The new X2 measures 179.8 inches in length, approximately 7.6 inches longer than its predecessor, and features a slightly broader body and larger wheels. The X2 xDrive28i comes with 19-inch wheels, while the X2 M35i xDrive features 20-inch wheels, with an option for 21-inch wheels.

Inside, the X2’s interior mirrors the design of the X1 and the 2-Series Active Tourer. It features a 10.3-inch screen serving as the instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch infotainment screen. It offers seating for five and 25.3 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 51.7 cubic feet.

The X2 incorporates BMW’s latest iDrive interface, version 9.0, improving user-friendliness. The infotainment screen’s home page displays the navigation system’s map view or a personalized home page for easy access to functions, minimizing distractions.

Standard features include LED headlights, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power tailgate, roof rails, privacy glass, and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Electronic driver-assist features include forward collision warning, active lane control, blind spot detection, and park sensors. The X2 M35i xDrive even features an illuminated grille.

Both X2 models are equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and a mechanical limited-slip differential. This setup delivers 241 hp for the X2 xDrive28i and 312 hp for the X2 M35i xDrive, with 0-60 mph acceleration figures of 6.2 and 5.2 seconds, respectively.

The standard top speed is 130 mph for both models, but the X2 xDrive28i can be raised to 149 mph, and the X2 M35i xDrive to 155 mph with performance tires. The X2 M35i xDrive features a sport-tuned chassis with adaptive dampers and substantial brake rotors measuring up to 15.2 inches at the front and 13.0 inches at the rear, adorned with gray, four-piston “M” logo calipers.

Production of the X2 takes place at BMW’s Regensburg plant in Germany, alongside the X1. Pricing details will be disclosed closer to the market launch next year.
