Ford has taken the wraps off the 2025 iteration of the Mustang GTD, an ultra-high-performance vehicle engineered for the racetrack, and it comes with a hefty price tag exceeding $300,000. This remarkable automobile had its debut at the prestigious Monterey Car Week event held in California. The brainchild behind this creation is none other than Ford’s CEO, Jim Farley. The Mustang GTD emerges as a frontrunner in terms of performance, carrying the torch forward from the renowned GT supercar legacy.
The development of the Mustang GTD was a collaborative venture, with assistance from Multimatic, a highly regarded Canadian firm specializing in engineering and racing. This partnership was formed with the shared goal of bringing this exceptional project to life. Drawing inspiration from the Mustang GT3 race car, the GTD pushes the boundaries of performance through enhanced aerodynamics, elevated power output, and improved downforce.
Of notable significance is the vehicle’s design philosophy, which places a strong emphasis on shedding weight. This objective is accomplished by incorporating magnesium wheels, a carbon-fiber driveshaft, and various other carbon-fiber components like the roof and fenders.
Engineering-wise, the focus was on achieving optimal weight distribution and maneuverability. This was realized through an innovative 8-speed dual-clutch transaxle layout that shifts the transmission to the rear, resulting in an almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution.
Furthermore, the Mustang GTD offers adaptable ride heights, variable traction control that can be accessed through the steering wheel, and a range of versatile driving modes.
Impressive braking capability is ensured by the installation of Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, which include substantial front discs and calipers, as well as rear rotors and pinchers. The vehicle’s power comes from a supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 engine, an enhanced version of the powertrain found in the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500.
The GTD’s engine setup, complete with dry-sump lubrication, is tailored to handle the lateral g-forces experienced during high-performance maneuvers.
While exact figures for acceleration and top speed are still under wraps, Ford has set its sights on achieving a sub-7-minute lap time at the Nürburgring track in Germany. Inside the GTD’s cabin, luxury and performance seamlessly blend with features like leather and synthetic suede upholstery, carbon-fiber accents, Recaro bucket seats, and digital displays.
Of special note, the interior boasts titanium components sourced from retired F-22 fighter jets, which include elements like paddle shifters, the rotary shifter dial, and a serial plate.
Ford’s intention is to produce the Mustang GTD as a limited-edition model. While the exact production numbers are undisclosed at this point, the company is planning to introduce the vehicle in either late 2024 or early 2025. Prospective buyers will need to undergo a selective ordering process reminiscent of the approach for the Ford GT, which involves obtaining approval from Ford after submitting a build slot application.
