Debuting earlier than anticipated, the Rivian R2S is slated for production in Illinois, starting at $45,000 and offering a range of up to 330 miles.
With dimensions smaller than the R1S SUV, the R2 features a shorter wheelbase and overall length, standing out from its sibling but sharing a longer wheelbase than the Tesla Model Y.
At 66.9 inches tall, the R2S opts for front-hinged rear windows and a roll-down tailgate window like the Toyota 4Runner, foregoing the split-tailgate design of its larger counterpart.
Seating five in a two-row configuration, the R2 lacks a third-row option, boasting fully foldable first and second-row seats along with a spacious frunk for additional storage or carrying a bike mounting system.
Constructed on a skateboard chassis with a battery pack of 4695-style cells, the R2 offers quick acceleration, with options for one, two, or three electric motors, achieving 0-60 mph in under 3.0 seconds.
Though not as rugged as its larger counterpart, the R2 maintains 9.8 inches of ground clearance, enabling off-road adventures with impressive approach and departure angles when equipped with optional 32-inch all-terrain tires.
Internally, the R2 features modern amenities such as a digital gauge cluster, a large touchscreen, and sustainable materials like birch wood trim and recycled ocean plastics.
Each R2 is equipped with a standard NACS charge port, enabling charging at Tesla Supercharging stations and high-speed CCS charging, with the port located on the rear passenger-side fender.
