Volvo EM90 electric minivan: Rear-wheel drive with an impressive 458-mile driving range

The introduction of the Volvo EM90 electric minivan unfolded in China last Sunday, where prospective buyers can already secure reservations. While plans for its availability in other markets are underway, specific details remain undisclosed.

Inspired by the iconic Duette wagon from the 1950s and ’60s, Volvo undertook the design journey for the EM90. However, observers cannot ignore the distinct similarities to the Zeekr 009 minivan, introduced the preceding year. Zeekr, a sibling brand to Volvo within the Zhejiang Geely portfolio, shares a commitment to manufacturing high-end electric vehicles (EVs).

Both the EM90 and Zeekr 009 utilize an extended version of Geely’s SEA modular EV platform. The EM90 is powered by a 116-kWh battery paired with a single electric motor generating 268 horsepower. Notable performance metrics include an 8.3-second 0-62 mph acceleration and a rapid 10-80% battery charge capability in approximately 30 minutes.

An innovative feature of the EM90 is its bidirectional charging system, allowing vehicle-to-grid capability at the owner’s residence. This technology has the potential to reduce energy bills by utilizing the vehicle as a battery during peak hours and recharging during off-peak periods. Responding to this emerging market, Volvo recently established the new business entity, Volvo Cars Energy Solutions.

In terms of design, the EM90 seamlessly incorporates contemporary Volvo styling into the minivan’s boxy structure. The headlights feature the iconic Thor’s Hammer daytime running light signature, and for the first time, the Volvo logo is illuminated. At the rear, the waterfall taillights, inspired by city skyscrapers, adopt a more rigid design. The standard 19-inch wheels prioritize aerodynamics, with an option for a 20-inch design for enhanced efficiency.

The interior of the EM90 stands out as a highlight, transforming the traditional minivan environment into a comfortable lounge setting. Across three rows, six individual seats offer personalized entertainment and comfort adjustments. The second-row seats, notably, include a massage function, individual ventilation and heating options, as well as built-in tables and cupholders. The audio experience is delivered through a sophisticated 21-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system.

The EM90 is a key component of Volvo’s strategic lineup of six EVs expected by 2026. This lineup includes the 2024 EX30 subcompact crossover and EX90 mid-size SUV, with a potential compact offering, likely named the EX60, and two sedans expected in the segments of the current S60 and S90, potentially labeled as the ES60 and ES90.
