2023 Genesis Electrified G80 AWD

The 2023 Genesis G80 stands out in the mid-size luxury sedan category, offering two turbo engine choices alongside a fully electric model, the Electrified G80. Its competitors include popular models like the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes E-Class, Cadillac CT5, and Volvo S90.

DESIGN

The Electrified G80 preserves a modest external look, featuring a slight increase in roof height of about half an inch. Genesis deliberately crafted it to harmoniously blend with existing G80 models, as demonstrated by the inconspicuous positioning of the diamond-shaped charge port within the solid mesh panel grille.

With its 19-inch alloy wheels, our Makalu Gray Electrified G80 maintains a consistent aesthetic appeal. The integration of the battery pack into the G80 prompted subtle modifications in the cabin, albeit not immediately evident in photos.

A slight decrease in headroom for both front and rear seats is noteworthy, particularly for taller individuals who may notice the proximity of the headliner to the top of their heads. Although the trunk space has been reduced by two cubic feet, the interior maintains its appeal as a comfortable retreat.

Featuring an elegant design and using premium materials throughout, the cabin of the Electrified G80 is a showcase of sophistication. Exclusively available in the well-equipped Prestige trim, it boasts luxurious elements like soft leather upholstery and attractive matte wood trim.

PERFORMANCE

Equipped with dual electric motors—one powering each axle—the Electrified G80 attains all-wheel drive, boasting a collective 365 horsepower. The acceleration proves swift, as Genesis asserts that the Electrified G80 achieves the 60 mph mark in just 4.1 seconds.

This acceleration surpasses the V-6-powered G80 Sport by 0.6 seconds in the race to 60 mph. The chassis retains a nimble demeanor reminiscent of its gasoline-powered counterpart, and the Electrified G80 incorporates a standard rear-wheel steering system.

Evidently, it provides a more dynamic sensation compared to its traditional gasoline-driven counterpart. Elevating the driving experience are regenerative brakes, finely calibrated with five distinct modes, spanning from coasting to full one-pedal driving.

Aligned with the Genesis G80 series, including the Electrified model, the emphasis remains on stability and a serene driving atmosphere over high performance. Yet, navigating winding roads brings satisfaction with impressive body control and a responsive steering wheel.

RANGE

Beneath the chassis of the Electrified G80 lies an 87.2-kilowatt-hour battery, delivering an expected range of 282 miles on a single charge. Throughout a week of Genesis driving, predominantly on highways with occasional city travel, our observations closely aligned with the official estimate, validating a range of 280 miles.

To substantiate Genesis’s stance, we conducted a comprehensive test with a 350-kW DC fast-charger. The outcomes verified that the battery efficiently achieved a charge level between 10 and 80 percent in approximately 22 minutes. In contrast, the use of a Level 2 outlet significantly extended the charging duration to multiple hours.

VERDICT

The 2023 Genesis Electrified G80 AWD has an MSRP of $79,825, resulting in a total price of $81,525.

Competition

Diverging from the multitude of choices, body variations, and power options offered by its German counterparts, the G80 embraces simplicity. The integration of the Electrified G80 seamlessly complements the standard G80, a commendable feature attributed to its attractive design and welcoming cabin.

Setting a distinctive tone, the 2024 Lucid Air boasts a substantial battery and compact motors designed in-house, resulting in unparalleled range and impressive acceleration.

Defying conventional norms in the realm of electric vehicles, the all-electric 2024 Porsche Taycan blends refined aesthetics with a performance capability that can reach up to 750 horsepower.

A prominent contender in the current electric vehicle landscape, the 2023 Tesla Model S maintains its competitiveness and allure among luxury electric cars.

Loaded with an abundance of technological and luxury features, the 2024 BMW i7 emerges as the flagship of electric vehicles, catering to those who seek a broad spectrum of electronic choices at their fingertips.
