2024 Kia EV9 GT-Line

Kia’s 2024 EV9 is a bold move into the luxury electric SUV market, taking design cues from its gas-powered Telluride sibling. With its muscular looks and premium features, the EV9 competes head-to-head with high-end electric rivals like the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, Audi E-Tron, Tesla Model X, and Rivian R1S, offering a stylish yet capable alternative in this growing segment.

DESIGN

Kia’s EV9 stands out with its daring design, making a statement as a three-row family SUV. The expansive, muscular proportions and wheels positioned at the edges give it a dynamic, robust character. Despite its tall rear, which presents aerodynamic challenges, Kia claims a drag coefficient of 0.28, aided by an integrated spoiler and streamlined underbody for better efficiency.

Drawing inspiration from Kia’s “tiger mask” concept, the front grille commands attention. LED daytime running lights extend from the bumpers into the fenders like bolts of lightning. The stacked cube design of the headlights adds a contemporary edge, while the GT-Line features a Digital Pattern Lighting Grille with customizable “L”-shaped lights, offering five distinct patterns.

At the rear, the taillights follow the lines of the front, climbing up the tailgate and extending to the roof spoiler. Bulging wheel arches frame 21-inch wheels, while the flat sides emphasize the SUV’s strong presence. Inside, the dashboard’s wide, horizontal design and sleek controls create a sense of openness, with ambient lighting that can be adjusted to maintain a calm atmosphere at night.

Focusing on sustainability over traditional luxury, Kia uses eco-friendly materials like plastics from over 70 recycled bottles in the EV9’s interior. The center console features a two-tier design for enhanced storage, with the shift stalk moved to the steering column. This opens up space between the console and dashboard, further accentuated by twin sunroofs to increase the cabin’s airy feel.

PERFORMANCE

Two permanent-magnet electric motors power the EV9 GT-Line, generating 379 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. Kia claims a 0-60 mph time of 5.0 seconds, though it feels quicker than the numbers suggest. Despite its hefty 5,886-pound frame, the EV9’s performance is unexpectedly strong, challenging the assumption that a heavy SUV can’t deliver swift acceleration.

Equipped with dual motors and a 99.8 kWh battery pack, the EV9 accelerates smoothly, reaching high speeds without hesitation. The battery adds 1,248 pounds to its weight, yet Kia’s estimated 270-mile range remains impressive for an SUV of this size and power. Though smaller EVs may offer longer ranges, this figure is solid for a three-row vehicle.

Expecting stellar handling from the EV9, especially in its striking Ocean Blue Gloss, proves well-founded. Despite its substantial size, it showcases remarkable agility, with sharp steering and a nearly perfect ride balance. Its cornering prowess surprises for such a large SUV, bringing to mind other performance-focused electric vehicles that set high standards.

Kia has effectively combined performance and practicality with the EV9, offering a unique electric SUV experience. Despite its size, it maneuvers like a compact model, with agile cornering and comfortable ride quality. While not the first to merge sportiness and roominess, this SUV stands out as the first electric model to achieve such an effective balance, making it a true leader in its class.

VERDICT

Kia’s EV9 faces tough competition from the Volvo EX90, which also offers three-row seating in an electric format, though it’s not as spacious. For those prioritizing fuel efficiency, the Toyota Highlander Hybrid presents a solid alternative with traditional gasoline power.

Tesla’s Model X provides generous space but lacks the EV9’s unique van-like atmosphere, echoing the luxurious Mercedes-Benz EQS. When it comes to size, the EV9 is similar to the Kia Telluride, but the Telluride feels somewhat dated in comparison.
