Honda surprised attendees at the Japan Mobility Show 2023 in Tokyo Wednesday morning by unveiling a new Prelude concept, a modern take on the beloved coupe that had disappeared from the new car market over two decades ago.
While specifics are scarce, Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe described this latest Prelude concept as an embodiment of the brand’s commitment to infusing “the joy of driving” into an electrified future.
During a press conference, Mibe emphasized the significance of the term “prelude” as an introduction to Honda’s forthcoming models that will carry forward the brand’s sporting legacy into the electrified era. He highlighted the Prelude Concept as a specialized sports model designed to deliver an exhilarating driving experience and an unprecedented level of excitement.
When the Prelude was last sold in the U.S. market, it had featured a front-wheel-drive two-door coupe equipped with a 200-horsepower inline-four engine. The modern concept seems to retain the sleek two-door coupe silhouette, albeit with more curved contours than its predecessor, evoking a resemblance to the Subaru BRZ/Toyota GR86.
