Markups.org: Tracking dealer price gouging on popular car models

Car buying can be a stressful experience, and the added pressure of dealership markups doesn’t make things any easier. Fortunately, a crowdsourced website called Markups.org is making it easier for consumers to avoid dealerships that charge excessive fees.

Markups.org allows users to report and share information on dealerships that add markups to popular models. The website gives consumers a platform to share their experiences and warn others about dealerships that charge more than the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP).

Some examples of vehicles that have been marked up by dealerships include the 2022 Toyota Sienna XLE AWD, which is being sold by Roseville Toyota in California for $63,060, a markup of $19,995 over the MSRP. Similarly, the 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 AWD Pro S is being sold by Ourisman Volkswagen of Rockville in Maryland for $72,580, which is $19,995 over the MSRP.

However, the highest markup reported on Markups.org is an astounding $200,000 on a GMC Hummer EV Edition 1. It’s clear that some dealerships are taking advantage of high demand and limited availability to add significant markups to the sticker price.

By using Markups.org, consumers can avoid dealerships that are charging excessive fees and find fair prices on popular models. The website helps level the playing field and gives consumers more bargaining power when shopping for a new car.
