Kia has recently unveiled images of its mid-size EV9 SUV, giving us a glimpse of its interior and exterior design. However, the details on battery size and powertrain specifications will only be disclosed during its official debut next month. The EV9 is based on the original concept introduced at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show but with less blocky styling.
Its design, similar to the EV6, showcases a bold and sophisticated style. The three-row electric flagship SUV is a significant milestone in Kia’s mission to provide sustainable mobility solutions. The design philosophy of “Opposites United” combines modern and natural elements, resulting in a harmonious and distinct shape.
The SUV’s sleek and sculptural lines give it a contemporary yet serene feel. According to Karim Habib, the Executive Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design Center, the EV9 aims to “redefine standards for design, connectivity, usability, and environmental responsibility.”
Kia has confirmed that the EV9 will have a seating capacity for six or seven passengers, with the option of a second-row bench seat or captain’s chairs. The captain’s chairs can swivel up to 180 degrees for easier interaction between second- and third-row passengers, as shown in the images. By twisting the second row by 90 degrees, passengers can easily enter and exit the vehicle.
Furthermore, Kia mentioned that the first- and second-row seats can recline, allowing passengers to relax while the EV9 is charging. While the second and third rows can fold flat to provide ample cargo space, there are no specific measurements available yet.
The EV9 is built on the E-GMP platform, a dedicated EV platform with an 800-volt electrical architecture that supports bi-directional charging, vehicle-to-grid functions, and fast charging times.
At the 2022 New York Auto Show, Kia America’s Chief Operating Officer, Steven Center, stated that the EV9 would require a range of about 300 miles, which is considered a suitable range for a larger vehicle. He also noted that the price gap between the EV9 and Telluride would be similar to that of the Niro EV and Niro hybrid or the EV6 and Sportage. This price gap is expected to place the starting price of the EV9 at around $50,000, which is $15,000 higher than the Telluride.
