Mercedes Delivers Electric G-Class Popemobile to Pope Francis

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius made his way to the Vatican on December 4, personally presenting Pope Francis with the keys to his latest Popemobile. This unique vehicle is a reimagined version of the iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class, designed to cater to the Pope’s ceremonial needs while embracing modern electric mobility.

Built on the electric G 580 platform featuring EQ Technology, this Popemobile marks a significant milestone as Mercedes-Benz’s first battery-powered model for the Pontiff. However, it’s not the first electric Popemobile overall—that distinction belongs to a 2017 model derived from the Opel Ampera-E, which itself was a rebadged Chevrolet Bolt sold briefly by Opel during its General Motors era.

Mercedes-Benz has maintained a longstanding tradition of crafting vehicles for the Vatican, a relationship spanning nearly a century. This history began in 1930 with a Nürburg 460 Pullman Saloon for Pope Pius XI, followed by iconic models like the 600 Pullman Landaulet and 300 SEL used by his successors. These vehicles have played an enduring role in Papal ceremonies.

Since the 1980s, the G-Class has been the foundation for many Popemobiles, starting with Pope John Paul II, who frequently utilized one for appearances in Saint Peter’s Square. The latest electric iteration is expected to debut later this month during Pope Francis’s official visit to Brazil and will also take center stage at the 2025 Jubilee celebrations.

The G 580 equipped with EQ Technology delivers 579 horsepower through a quad-motor all-wheel-drive system designed for commercial models. However, the Papal version prioritizes low-speed functionality, reflecting the unique demands of public engagements and ceremonial use.

Inside the rear cabin, a rotating central seat allows Pope Francis to interact with audiences from various angles. Additional seating on either side accommodates passengers, and a retractable protective canopy is available for adverse weather conditions. This thoughtful design ensures both function and flexibility for the Pontiff’s needs.
