Hyundai Initium Concept Arrives at 2024 LA Auto Show Previewing Hydrogen SUV

Hyundai selected the name “Initium,” meaning “beginning” or “first” in Latin, to underscore its pioneering work in fuel cell technology. Since 2018, the Nexo has been a mainstay of Hyundai’s hydrogen lineup, which also includes commercial vehicles. The Initium concept marks a fresh direction for Hyundai’s hydrogen-powered future.

The Initium follows a typical fuel cell setup, combining a fuel cell with a battery to power its electric motor. This motor now produces 201 horsepower—a 50-hp boost over the Nexo model. Hyundai attributes this increase to a more robust fuel cell stack and an upgraded battery for high-demand performance. By comparison, the Nexo’s fuel cell offers 127 hp, paired with a 40-kWh battery.

Hyundai has not released full details yet but estimates a range of over 400 miles for the Initium, though it hasn’t specified the test cycle used. To boost efficiency, the Initium includes aerodynamic wheels and low-resistance tires. Hyundai’s commitment to fuel cell technology spans nearly 30 years, and the company remains dedicated to advancing hydrogen power, hoping that wider vehicle availability will encourage expansion of fueling networks.

Many automakers are actively investing in hydrogen technology. Toyota, for example, has joined forces with BMW to advance next-generation fuel cells, with BMW planning to introduce this technology by 2028. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Auto Show, starting on Nov. 22, is set to feature Hyundai’s debut of the 2025 Ioniq 9 electric SUV.
