Mazda’s 2025 CX-90 stands out as a three-row crossover SUV, offering flexible seating for six to eight passengers depending on trim. Competing with heavyweights like the Honda Pilot, Toyota Grand Highlander, and Kia Telluride, the CX-90 blends style and practicality, aiming to carve out its niche in the crowded midsize SUV segment with its spacious cabin and premium features.
DESIGN

The 2025 Mazda CX-90 showcases a sophisticated design. Its long, sculpted hood and flowing lines combine to create a strong yet graceful presence. Our test model, finished in Rhodium White Premium with a black Nappa leather interior, offers a refined sense of luxury. Although priced higher, its balanced proportions and meticulous details elevate the overall experience, making it feel more upscale than expected.
A 12.3-inch display dominates most trims, while the base model’s smaller screen can seem somewhat lacking. Below it, the climate controls are organized with clear, user-friendly buttons and knobs. The second-row captain’s chairs enhance both style and comfort. They offer extra legroom and create a more open, spacious feel, while providing easier access to the third row.
PERFORMANCE
Mazda introduces a new plug-in hybrid version for the 2025 CX-90, enhancing fuel economy. This model swaps the six-cylinder engine for a 2.5-liter four-cylinder paired with a 68 kW electric motor and standard all-wheel drive, delivering 323 horsepower. Positioned between the 280-hp six-cylinder and the 340-hp high-output models, the drivetrain can feel a bit jarring, with noticeable shifts between gas and electric power at lower speeds.
Acceleration can be inconsistent, with delays before power kicks in. Fuel economy falls short, reaching only 24.5 mpg after 150 miles of city driving—just slightly better than the six-cylinder. On the upside, the CX-90 plug-in hybrid excels in electric mode, offering a quiet, smooth ride with precise handling. However, the shift to a four-cylinder engine sacrifices some of the CX-90’s usual refinement.
VERDICT
We spent a week with the 2025 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus, which starts at $57,950. With the addition of a $595 charge for the Rhodium White Metallic paint, plus delivery and other fees, the final price comes in just under $60,000.
Competition
Similar to the CX-90, Toyota’s Highlander features a hybrid powertrain, though it lacks a plug-in option. Even so, it slightly outperforms the Mazda in fuel efficiency.
While the base Highlander may feel a bit tight, the Grand Highlander offers generous space for both passengers and cargo. Meanwhile, the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade, built on the same platform, impress with their premium interiors and smooth handling.
Nissan’s 2025 Pathfinder stands out with a spacious interior and practical features, all at a competitive price. For those interested in the CX-90 but without the need for a third row, the Mazda CX-70 provides a comparable experience without the added seats.
