2025 Kia Sorento PHEV SX-Prestige AWD

Kia offers the Sorento in both hybrid and traditional gas variants, positioning it as a midsize crossover SUV with three rows of seating. Competing directly with models like the Mitsubishi Outlander, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Subaru Ascent, it delivers a versatile option for those seeking family-friendly transportation with a blend of fuel efficiency and practicality.

DESIGN

Kia’s 2024 and 2025 refreshes dial down on previous generation’s exterior clutter, drawing influence from the brand’s larger SUVs. A more rugged, blocky front, complemented by a wider grille and vertically stacked headlights, bring a refreshing blend of simplicity and strength. Our test model showcased Volcanic Sand paint, a subtle gray interior, and 19-inch alloy wheels, striking a balance between elegance and boldness.

For 2025, both hybrid and PHEV versions receive updates, aligning with the 2024 Sorento’s refreshed look. Inside, the new digital displays introduce a more premium feel, though the dashboard remains somewhat cluttered. While clever storage solutions are abundant, some lower-quality materials detract from the overall experience.

PERFORMANCE

The Sorento plug-in hybrid pairs a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission, bolstered by a 66.9-kW electric motor and a 13.8-kWh battery. Together, they produce 261 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque, delivering excellent acceleration and a notable 32 miles of electric-only range, making it the standout performer in the Sorento lineup.

For 2025, the Sorento offers a refined suspension, featuring MacPherson struts up front and an independent multi-link rear. While it delivers a smooth, composed ride, hybrid variants are prone to more road and wind noise, especially when driving on electric power alone. Steering, though typical for this class, feels uninspiring and lacks engagement.

VERDICT

We spent a week behind the wheel of the 2025 Kia Sorento PHEV SX-Prestige AWD, which comes in at a total price of $54,690.

Competition

Just beneath the Telluride, the Sorento offers a slightly more compact third row but remains a strong competitor against rivals like the Hyundai Santa Fe, which mirrors the Palisade’s spacious rear seating. Mitsubishi’s Outlander, with its tighter third row and plug-in hybrid option, and the Nissan Rogue, which delivers comparable value in a two-row format, are also contenders in this category.

Honda’s Passport, while similarly sized, lacks a third row, limiting its overall seating capacity. The Subaru Ascent, however, offers a standout combination with a spacious third row, standard all-wheel drive, and a comprehensive suite of safety features, making it an excellent alternative for families looking for both practicality and peace of mind on the road.
