Mazda’s Dedicated EV Platform to Debut with First Model in 2027

Mazda currently utilizes a platform developed for electric vehicles in its EZ-6 sedan, available in China. This platform, known as EPA1, is sourced from Changan, a Chinese automaker. However, Mazda is working on its own EV platform, set to launch in 2027.

In a recent reveal, Mazda showcased its upcoming platform, which features a skateboard-style design with a flat battery pack integrated into the floor. This platform is designed for flexibility, accommodating various battery options, vehicle types, and future software updates.

Mazda’s first EV on this new platform is expected to be an SUV, built in Japan for both local and international markets. It will use batteries co-developed with Panasonic, ensuring a robust power source for future models.

Although not officially confirmed, there are rumors of a possible plug-in hybrid variant, possibly featuring a small rotary engine as a range extender. Mazda’s MX-30 electric crossover currently offers a similar setup in select regions.

Before the debut of its dedicated EV platform, Mazda will release an electric crossover built on Changan’s platform. This model, previewed by the Mazda Arata concept, is expected to hit the market in 2024.

Additionally, Mazda provided an update on its Skyactiv-Z engine family, introduced last fall. These engines are optimized for hybrid powertrains and will debut in 2027, with the next-gen CX-5 likely being the first vehicle to feature this new powertrain. The upcoming CX-5 has already been seen in testing and is anticipated to be unveiled later this year.
