Honda aims to transition entirely to electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles by 2040, signaling that even high-performance models like the Civic Type R must either adapt to electrification or face discontinuation.
In 2023, Honda assured enthusiasts that the Civic Type R would evolve into an electric model, provided it delivers the same engaging performance. Toshihiro Akiwa, head of Honda’s EV development center, reaffirmed this but admitted replicating the gas-powered experience presents significant challenges.
At the 2025 CES event in Las Vegas, Akiwa shared with Auto Express that an electric Civic Type R would only debut if it embodies the “joy of driving.” He defined this as encompassing raw power, sound, vibration, acceleration, and an immersive human-machine connection.
Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 N has demonstrated that EVs can excite through artificial sounds and simulated gear shifts, and Honda seems to be exploring a similar route. Its next-generation hybrids, including the 2026 Prelude, will feature simulated shifting. Additionally, Honda has developed a manual transmission simulation and sound systems to emulate everything from an NSX to a Formula 1 car.
Before fully transitioning to electric, a hybrid Civic Type R may emerge. Honda has committed to introducing more hybrid models as a bridge, gradually phasing out gas-powered engines ahead of its 2040 goal.
