2024 Volkswagen Atlas SEL

Volkswagen expands its 2024 Atlas lineup with the three-row SUV and the more coupe-like, five-seat Atlas Cross Sport. Competing with models like the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot, it brings a fresh approach to midsize family SUVs. We took the Atlas Cross Sport for a thorough test drive, and you can read our in-depth review here.

DESIGN

With a refined yet subtle exterior, the Atlas showcases a design that revolves around its three-row configuration. This year’s interior refresh enhances its appeal without drastically changing its personality. Its classic design stands out for its understated charm. Two models are available: the standard Atlas with a traditional SUV profile and the Cross Sport, which trims 5.1 inches and swaps three rows for two, sporting a more aggressive roofline.

Both models share a front design, featuring bold metallic accents and a large VW emblem set against a grille that’s lit up in select trims for added character. Noteworthy design cues include muscular fender arches and thin fender vents that highlight the vehicle’s sharp lines. At the rear, sleek LED taillights and expansive glass maintain a clean, sophisticated look, while the Cross Sport’s sloping roofline offers a more dynamic profile at the expense of cargo space.

Inside, the Atlas steps up with a larger 12.0-inch touchscreen now standard, integrated into a soft-touch dash that adds a premium vibe across all trims. A smaller gear selector frees up more space in the center console, complemented by a 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster. With upgraded finishes like light walnut, gray wood, and carbon fiber, the Atlas aligns closer with competitors like the Telluride and Palisade. Some Peak Edition models add a bold avocado green paint, but harvest gold remains off the palette, likely due to shifting design trends favoring more contemporary and subdued colors.

PERFORMANCE

Volkswagen’s Atlas features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 269 horsepower, with power sent to either the front or all four wheels. Paired with 273 lb-ft of torque and an 8-speed automatic transmission, the SUV reaches 60 mph in 7.5 seconds with all-wheel drive. While not overly thrilling, the turbo-4 delivers smooth, seamless power, with sound insulation helping to create a quieter ride by minimizing harsh engine noise.

Switching to Sport mode improves throttle response, reducing the minimal turbo lag noticed in standard settings. The 8-speed automatic transmission stays in the engine’s sweet spot, while paddle shifters offer manual shifting options. However, those seeking a more dynamic driving experience might prefer the manual-transmission GLI. Overall, the setup is well-tuned and aligned with the Atlas’ family-oriented design.

Weighing in with a robust 5,000-pound towing capacity, the Atlas handles its size with surprising poise. With 20-inch wheels on our test model, the ride quality remains smooth, soaking up road bumps while maintaining excellent rebound control. Whether it’s the seven-passenger Atlas or the five-seat Cross Sport, both models provide similar ride quality. Steering is responsive and light, progressively gaining weight as the SUV confidently navigates turns.

VERDICT

Volkswagen’s 2024 Atlas SEL starts at an MSRP of $48,445. Opting for the 2nd-Row Dual Captain’s Chair Package, priced at $695, brings the total to $50,490. This package enhances passenger comfort with individual seating that offers easier access to the third row, especially valuable for families. The added space between the chairs also boosts versatility, making it a practical and worthwhile upgrade for many buyers.
