Toyota Unveils Tacoma TRD ProRunner Race Concept Built for Desert Racing at 2024 SEMA

Kicking off the 2024 SEMA show in Las Vegas, Toyota introduces the Tacoma TRD ProRunner Race concept, a purpose-built variant of the Tacoma midsize pickup, engineered for challenging races like the Baja 1000.

Also featured are the 4Runner TRD Surf and Land Cruiser ROX, hinting that this Tacoma concept might take on the Ford Ranger Raptor. Built on a 2025 Tacoma XtraCab, it incorporates TRD Pro off-road enhancements such as 2.5-inch Fox Quick Switch 3 dampers and front TRD upper control arms.

Further modifications enhance its toughness, adding underbody protection, a custom roll cage, harnesses for driver and navigator, and a reinforced bed for additional fuel storage. TRD Pro wheels with BFGoodrich all-terrain tires and a weight-saving net instead of a tailgate complete the setup.

Toyota remains silent on the powertrain, though the standard Tacoma’s 2.4-liter turbo-4 hybrid delivers 326 hp. Last year’s Tacoma concept featured a twin-turbo V-6 with 421 hp—a perfect powertrain for a Raptor rival. Honoring Toyota’s partnership with Jimmie Johnson’s Legacy Motor Club, this build also nods to Johnson’s off-road roots and Baja 1000 legacy.
