Toyota is gearing up to feature an exciting vehicle at the 2024 SEMA auto show next week: the 4Runner TRD Surf concept, previewed on Thursday. This rugged version of the 4Runner boasts a removable rear canopy, reminiscent of options offered in earlier generations. The automaker aims to honor classic 4Runners while appealing to surfers, especially those who frequented the Southern California beaches in the 1980s.
Based on the redesigned 2025 4Runner platform, particularly the TRD Limited variant, this concept underwent significant mechanical changes. A notable alteration was switching from a four-door to a two-door body style. Toyota began with a previous-generation 4Runner for initial experiments before finalizing the design. Many custom parts were produced using traditional fabrication methods combined with modern 3D printing techniques.
Chassis upgrades ensure the vehicle can conquer the toughest beach dunes. Notable enhancements include long-travel suspension, a custom front axle, and 17-inch wheels paired with 37-inch tires. Inside, the modifications feature waterproof flooring, which is essential for sandy beach adventures.
Unveiled earlier this year, the 2025 4Runner is set to launch later. It replaces the previous V-6 engine with a turbocharged four-cylinder, also available as a hybrid. This concept features a hybrid setup, combining a 2.4-liter turbo-4 and an electric motor for a total output of 278 horsepower. Power is managed by a full-time four-wheel-drive system with an electronically controlled dual-range transfer case.
As the SEMA show approaches on November 4 in Las Vegas, Toyota hints at more surprises in store, promising an exciting showcase for automotive enthusiasts.
