Genesis brings the Electrified GV70 to 23 states this year, offering the Advanced trim starting at $67,645 and the Prestige at $77,445. Assembled in Montgomery, Alabama, this model qualifies for a partial EV tax credit, setting it apart from other GV70 versions, which are built in Ulsan, South Korea.
DESIGN
With its Cardiff Green finish, the Electrified GV70 makes a statement with a silver diamond-patterned grille and sleek twin LED headlights, giving it a bold, striking look. The charging port is cleverly concealed within the grille, while narrow dual-LED taillights and a unique C-pillar featuring parabolic lines enhance its sharp, aggressive profile.
Inside the Electrified GV70 Prestige, Glacier White leather trim brings an air of refinement, with a minimalistic center console adding to the luxurious feel. Though the touch-sensitive climate controls may take some getting used to, the large rotary dials on the center dashboard offer a more intuitive and stylish option.
Storage options are somewhat limited, with the Electrified GV70’s front trunk just spacious enough for the 110V charging cable. Rear cargo space, even with the second row folded down, maxes out at 56.5 cubic feet—significantly less than the 85 cubic feet found in the Tesla Model X, which could be a limitation for those needing more room.
PERFORMANCE
Engaging Sport mode in the Electrified GV70 enhances performance, delivering a surge in power when acceleration is needed. A quick tap on the boost button on the lower steering wheel unleashes up to 483 horsepower for a brief 10 seconds, offering an extra thrill on demand.
Once battery levels drop below 25%, the boost feature becomes inactive, limiting that added power boost. While performance is impressive, this model doesn’t quite match the power of electric SUVs like the Model X or iX M60, which can exceed 600 horsepower.
Mode changes are easy with the control button on the left side of the steering wheel, allowing you to switch between Comfort for smoother driving, Sport for dynamic responsiveness, and Eco for energy efficiency, even if it sacrifices rapid acceleration.
With paddle shifters on the wheel, you can select from four regenerative braking levels, including i-Pedal mode for a seamless one-pedal drive. Despite its weight, the Electrified GV70 handles with surprising agility, maintaining a light feel even on uneven road surfaces.
Its low center of gravity, courtesy of the battery pack, boosts stability and handling confidence. In Prestige trim, the electronic limited-slip differential enhances torque distribution, providing improved traction and cornering control, especially on slippery roads.
Road Active Noise Control ensures a serene cabin, minimizing wind and road sounds for a peaceful ride. You can also choose from three synthetic engine sounds through the audio system or turn them off entirely for a quieter driving experience.
RANGE
Delivering an estimated range of 236 miles, the Electrified GV70 reaches efficiency levels of up to 2.5 miles per kWh. Genesis claims that with a 250-kW fast charger, drivers can add around 60 miles of range in just five minutes, which is ideal for quick stops.
Using a standard 240-volt home outlet, the GV70 requires approximately seven hours to fully recharge. As an added benefit, Genesis provides three years of complimentary 30-minute charging sessions at Electrify America stations, making public charging easier.
A handy power outlet in the cargo area allows you to keep smaller devices like laptops charged on the go, adding an extra layer of convenience for road trips or work on the move.
VERDICT
Priced from $66,450, the 2024 Electrified GV70 AWD Prestige we tested included the optional Prestige Package, which adds $6,800, bringing the total to $75,020 for this luxury electric SUV.
Competition
Growing competition among electric SUVs has introduced new contenders such as the Acura ZDX and Porsche Macan Electric, which now join established models like the Cadillac Lyriq, Lexus RZ, Tesla Model Y, and Volvo XC40 Recharge, all vying in this expanding segment.
While some competitors offer greater range and stronger performance, the Electrified GV70 brings its own set of strengths to the table. Genesis will need to adapt quickly to the fast-evolving EV landscape to stay competitive in this dynamic market.
