2024 Toyota Prius Prime

Toyota’s latest Prius takes a bold step forward, departing from its earlier designs. Stylish and angular, this new model holds its own anywhere, not just within Prius history. Although the exterior is striking, the interior could use some of that same daring flair.

This generation is both lower and wider, leaving behind the familiar oval shape for a sharper, more defined wedge profile. Slim LED lights along the hood and a nearly grille-less front add a modern, almost EV-inspired look. The signature feature, a steeply raked windshield, feels like it belongs on a concept car.

In profile, the design stands out. The windshield seamlessly flows into the car’s body lines, meeting the sills in a light bar across the tail. Final touches like the bold “Prius” badge and a one-piece hatch window enhance its sleekness, replacing the older split-glass look.

Inside, the cabin holds to Prius tradition. The driver’s seat takes on a sportier feel, but the dash sticks with a tried-and-true layout: a small gauge cluster in front of the driver and a portrait-style touchscreen. While it doesn’t push design boundaries, the interior feels cleaner and more intuitive, staying clear of visual clutter.

PERFORMANCE

Under the hood, the Prius Prime features a 2.0-liter gasoline engine paired with two electric motors, delivering impressive fuel efficiency. In hybrid mode, the SE trim can achieve up to 52 miles per gallon, making it a strong contender in the eco-friendly vehicle segment. Thanks to its plug-in hybrid system with a 13.6-kWh lithium-ion battery and an SAE J1772 charging port, this model offers an electric-only range of up to 45 miles before the gasoline engine engages.

In EV mode, efficiency reaches about 3.9 miles per kWh, comparable to many fully electric vehicles. Charging with a standard 120-volt outlet takes around 11 hours, while a 240-volt Level 2 charger reduces that time to just four hours. For short daily commutes, drivers may find that gasoline is rarely necessary, making it both economical and eco-friendly.

Power is routed to the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that smoothly transitions between electric and gasoline modes, providing a combined output of 220 horsepower. Although high-performance thrills aren’t the focus, the Prius Prime offers sufficient torque for steady acceleration, making it capable for routine driving scenarios like merging or passing slower vehicles.

Steering feels light yet precise, adding to a balanced driving experience. Thoughtful interior design, paired with a responsive suspension, ensures a comfortable ride that minimizes the impact of road imperfections. Overall, the Prius Prime prioritizes comfort and efficiency, making it a practical and enjoyable choice for everyday driving.

VERDICT

The 2024 Toyota Prius Prime SE had a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $32,675, with the total cost, including fees, amounting to $33,339.

Competition

When it comes to fuel efficiency, the Prius outshines both the Toyota Corolla and Corolla Cross Hybrid, but it does come with a higher price tag and slightly less cabin space. This trade-off is often justified by its eye-catching design.

Toyota’s RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid matches the Prius Plug-in Hybrid in range but offers more interior room, although it commands a significantly higher price.

For buyers looking for a budget-friendly and stylish alternative, the Kia Niro offers a variety of configurations while remaining economical.

Those interested in an all-electric vehicle without breaking the $30,000 mark will likely find the Nissan Leaf appealing, especially given the attractive discounts frequently available.
