The 2024 Lexus RZ combines familiar brand elements with refined updates, balancing innovation with Lexus’s established identity. The exterior sports the signature hourglass grille and sharp, modern lines, while the interior has been streamlined to replace the previously busy arrangement of buttons, dials, and overlapping elements.
Our test model came in the striking Ether and Black Onyx paint scheme, paired with a Thunderstorm and Macadamia Ultrasuede interior accented in Charcoal. The Bi-Tone Paint option adds a hint of elegance, evoking the sophistication of brands like Rolls-Royce.
RZ’s sleek profile, especially with the optional 20-inch Dark Premium Metallic alloy wheels, gives it a sporty vibe that blends crossover and wagon elements. Lexus avoids the typical black cladding found on many SUVs, including the Toyota bZ4X, leading to a more refined appearance. At the back, a floating roof design and twin winglets replace a traditional spoiler, introducing a distinctive touch.
Inside, RZ aligns more closely with the Lexus NX than the Toyota bZ4X, which will please many fans. An instrument cluster positioned closer to the steering wheel enhances accessibility for the driver. A 14-inch touchscreen takes center stage on the dashboard, contributing to a modern, minimalist feel. Below the screen, climate controls and a volume knob are conveniently placed, offering a refreshing change from previous Lexus interiors.
One notable feature is the $550 Dynamic Sky Panorama Glass Roof. With a press of a button, this all-glass roof shifts from clear to opaque, providing shade on sunny days or expansive views when desired. This versatility enhances comfort without the need for traditional sunshades, making it a practical choice for passengers.
PERFORMANCE
The RZ 300e offers Lexus’s signature quiet comfort, now enhanced by its electric powertrain. With 201 horsepower and 196.4 lb-ft of torque from zero rpm, it reaches 60 mph in 7.8 seconds—quick enough for everyday drives. One-pedal driving is smooth, while braking remains strong and reliable.
When it comes to steering, the RZ delivers accurate handling, though it doesn’t offer much road feedback—a common trait in today’s electric vehicles. It’s not designed for sharp cornering, but if you do push it, you’ll feel the weight; still, the plush suspension keeps the ride steady and well-managed.
The RZ offers a range of drive modes that tweak throttle response and steering, though finding them in the menu takes a bit of patience. Ultimately, the 300e trim is crafted more for relaxed cruising than performance. Standard mode suits it best—simply set it, forget it, and enjoy the smooth drive.
RANGE
The Lexus RZ 300e may not lead the pack in range, but it excels in energy efficiency. The size of the wheels and tires significantly influences its performance. With standard 18-inch wheels, the single-motor RZ 300e boasts a range of 266 miles and an impressive EPA rating of 125 MPGe.
This performance comes out to roughly 3.5 miles per kWh, reflecting commendable efficiency. However, choosing the larger 20-inch wheels reduces these numbers, with the range dipping to 224 miles and the MPGe down to 105.
When it comes to charging at home, the RZ features a 7.0-kW onboard charger. This allows you to fully recharge the battery in roughly 9.5 hours with a 240-volt, 32-amp connection. To facilitate this, Lexus has teamed up with Qmerit to offer installation services for ChargePoint 240-volt chargers.
VERDICT
During our week-long test drive of the 2024 Lexus RZ 300e Luxury, the base price stood at $59,730, and with the added features, it climbed to $63,390.
Competition
The Lexus RZ may share its platform with the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra, yet it distinguishes itself with a sleek, refined aesthetic that sets it apart.
In the compact electric SUV segment, the Volvo C40, Polestar 2, and Volvo XC40 Recharge share a similar foundation and electric powertrain. The C40 and Polestar 2 favor a hatchback profile, while the XC40 Recharge retains the traditional crossover shape.
For those seeking a larger EV, the Cadillac Lyriq is an appealing choice with its 102-kWh battery, offering an estimated 312-mile range, all within an interior built for luxury.
The Genesis GV60, on the other hand, excels with its stylish cabin, cutting-edge technology, ultra-fast DC charging, and thrilling acceleration.
And the Tesla Model Y continues to dominate, boasting impressive range and efficiency, cementing its place as a leader in the electric vehicle market.
