BYD Overtakes Tesla as the World’s Top EV Maker in 2025 as Global Sales Shift

BYD ended 2025 with real momentum, pushing global sales up 7.7 percent to 4.6 million. A big part of that came from EV demand, which climbed 28 percent, leaving just under half of BYD’s deliveries electrified. Tesla headed the other way, reporting global deliveries down 9 percent to 1.64 million. Put those numbers side by side and BYD walks away with the number-one EV spot.

US sales were a tougher story for Tesla. Once federal EV subsidies disappeared, the last three months lost some of their lift. Lower-priced versions of Model 3 and Model Y arrived in the fall to keep the lineup within reach, but it was not enough to slow the slide. Without incentives, even repeat shoppers started second-guessing timing. Price moves helped at the margin, yet the mood stayed cautious.

Politics has not helped, either. Tesla’s identity is still tied closely to Elon Musk and his ability to sell a bold vision, from bulletproof stainless-steel trucks to android servants and fleets of robotaxis. When reality falls short, frustration sticks, and the missing new Tesla Roadster after eight years keeps coming up for a reason. Add Musk aligning with the second Trump administration, and some former buyers simply backed away.

Some critics will enjoy seeing Tesla lose the top spot, but automakers across the board will be paying attention. BYD is not just a Tesla problem, it is an everyone problem, and the U.K. makes that clear with BYD sales up 880 percent while U.K. automakers work through supply chain issues. More updated and facelifted BYD models are coming, even as rivals like the Geely group and Xiaomi close in. Ford and Toyota will be watching.
