People familiar with early testing say the work is underway, though they remain unnamed because the effort is still private. Progress signals a real shift inside the company, especially for a feature Tesla declined to adopt for many years.
Apple’s CarPlay brings an iPhone-centered interface shaped for automotive screens, widely used across the industry and considered essential by many drivers. Adding it would represent a major change for Tesla and for Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk, who previously pushed aside calls to embrace Apple’s software. Internal attitudes now appear to be shifting, raising new expectations for what Tesla could offer next.
Musk’s disagreements with Apple stretch back years, often tied to App Store rules and Apple’s move to hire Tesla engineers during its abandoned car program. People briefed on current discussions say Tesla is looking at a CarPlay launch within the coming months, though plans could easily shift. Tesla often delays or drops features even after long development cycles.
Tesla relies heavily on its own infotainment system, which includes built-in apps, messaging, and a full web browser. Plans call for CarPlay to appear inside a dedicated window inside Tesla’s interface, according to people familiar with the design direction. Apple’s system will not replace Tesla’s operating software as it does in some other vehicles. FSD, or full self-driving mode, will continue to rely on Tesla’s own navigation system, keeping Apple’s software apart from those advanced features.
Tesla plans to use the standard version of CarPlay instead of the Ultra format offered in select Aston Martins and other models. Ultra allows deeper control over displays, seat functions, and climate settings, while Tesla is choosing the traditional approach. Apple’s update to standard CarPlay in iOS 26 added helpful widgets for weather, schedules, and other quick-glance information.
iPhone owners will be able to connect through USB or wirelessly, with Tesla preparing to support cable-free pairing. Android Auto, Google’s counterpart for devices running Alphabet Inc.’s operating system, is not being developed for Tesla vehicles. CarPlay support across Tesla’s US-leading EV lineup would give Apple a powerful channel for keeping users tied to its product ecosystem.
