McLaren Prepares First SUV for 2028 Launch as New P34 Coupe and 788HS Supercar Join Expanding Lineup

Bentley’s Bentayga, Lamborghini’s Urus, Aston Martin’s DBX, Rolls-Royce’s Cullinan, and Ferrari’s Purosangue illustrate how deeply luxury automakers rely on SUVs today. McLaren remains the exception, though that stance appears set to change soon. A report from Automotive News points to a 2028 arrival for McLaren’s first SUV, aligning with a broader strategy to bring several new models to market as the brand expands its future lineup.

McLaren’s global dealer meeting held near London on November 11 reportedly revealed early direction for this shift. A five-seat, four-door configuration signals unfamiliar ground for the company, supported by an all-wheel-drive V-8 hybrid powertrain. One retailer explained to AN that plug-in capability won’t be part of the formula, with engineers opting for a traditional hybrid system designed to amplify performance rather than emphasize electric-only operation.

Dealers were shown a clay model that reportedly mirrors the stance of a larger Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT Coupe, complete with substantial 24-inch wheels. Muscular bodywork stands out, shaped by aerodynamic contours and a split-headlight configuration positioned flush with the surface instead of recessed like the 750S. Early impressions describe a purposeful and expressive design direction consistent with McLaren’s performance-focused identity.

A wagon-inspired silhouette reportedly rounds out the form, strengthened by a sizable rear spoiler, a strong diffuser, and a pronounced spine running the length of the vehicle. McLaren is said to be preparing annual model launches through 2028, beginning with the W1 hypercar next year. These developments follow CYVN Holdings’ acquisition of McLaren and its merger with Forseven earlier this year.

CYVN’s broader investments include control of Gordon Murray Technologies, known for its connection to the GMA T.50, along with a minority stake in Nio. McLaren aims to utilize resources from both GMT and Forseven as upcoming models take shape. One year before the SUV, the report suggests that a new two-door, mid-engine coupe will debut with a refreshed design language intended to mark a new stylistic direction.

Codenamed P34, this coupe is expected to use a hybrid-assisted V-6 generating close to 800 horsepower. A longer footprint than the Artura and higher pricing help distinguish its place in the lineup, while styling cues reportedly nod to the iconic McLaren F1. Cabin upgrades are said to include nappa and aniline leather, a large infotainment display, and a fully digital gauge cluster designed to elevate interior quality.

Momentum continues in 2027 with the arrival of the 788HS, an evolution of the 750S that will mark the end of the current generation. A roof scoop and tall rear wing will define its look, and production will be limited to 200 units split between coupe and convertible versions. A successor designed to take on Ferrari’s 849 Testarossa is expected the following year.

Further expansion includes updates to the McLaren GTS, with a redesigned grand tourer featuring a 2+2 seating layout planned for 2027. A convertible version of the W1 is reportedly scheduled for 2028, equipped with a removable three-piece hardtop intended to blend open-air driving with structural refinement.
