Tesla Semi refresh debuts with 500 mile range and production timeline

Eight years after its splashy introduction, Tesla’s Semi has resurfaced with a cleaned-up look and a renewed push toward real-world production. Deliveries remain extremely limited, but a fresh appearance at Tesla’s latest shareholder meeting suggests continued movement. A true production ramp still lies ahead, yet this update signals that the all-electric long-haul truck remains central to Tesla’s commercial ambitions rather than a forgotten experiment.

Styling adjustments now tie the Semi more closely to Tesla’s recent design direction. One official image shows a slim, full-width light bar spanning the front, replacing earlier vertical lamps. A reworked bumper and revised aero channels sit ahead of the front wheels, smoothing airflow. Cameras mounted near the doors pair with side mirrors, offering clearer visibility and hinting at tech foundations for advanced driver assistance.

Updates go beyond styling changes, with improvements that matter to fleets watching operating costs. Efficiency steps up, payload capacity increases, and Tesla still targets a 500-mile range at 1.7 kWh per mile. That math points to roughly 850 kWh of battery capacity, giving the Semi the energy needed for serious interstate hauling without cutting into usable distance between charging stops.

Output remains serious at a claimed 1072 horsepower, backed by charging capability of up to 1.2 megawatts, or 1200 kW. Tesla says a 70-percent recharge can happen in roughly half an hour, limiting downtime for long hauls. The company also asserts the truck is “designed for autonomy,” though firm details have yet to be shared, leaving fleet planners still waiting for specifics on automated operation.

Production plans now call for volume manufacturing to begin next year. Tesla originally targeted a 2019 start following the 2017 reveal, yet timelines shifted along the way. A Nevada facility set to open in late 2025 is now expected early next year, positioning this refreshed Semi for broader rollout and regular fleet deployment rather than another limited demonstration phase.
