Lexus ES Returns for 8th Generation with Bold Design and First-Ever Electric Variant

Lexus has officially pulled the cover off the 2026 ES at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition, signaling a new chapter for the brand’s midsize luxury sedan. This latest evolution introduces a battery electric variant for the first time in the model’s history, expanding its portfolio beyond hybrids. Since debuting in 1989, the ES has quietly set the tone for refined, understated motoring.

Refreshed inside and out, the eighth-generation ES brings a redesigned cabin, sleeker proportions, and a three-tiered powertrain lineup—including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and full electric. This transformation is anchored by a design and engineering direction Lexus dubs “Experience Elegance and Electrified Sedan,” a vision that seeks to blend serenity, modern tech, and emotional engagement behind the wheel.

Design language gets a future-forward overhaul, borrowing cues from the LF-ZC concept while debuting a new “Clean Tech x Elegance” aesthetic. Swept-back proportions and a cab-rearward silhouette add presence without being showy. A more sculptural front end integrates Lexus’ next-gen spindle design, while out back, bold lighting and a squat stance give the ES a sense of dynamic maturity.

Smart packaging allows the ES to maintain its trademark spaciousness even with a larger underfloor battery. Subtle changes in tire placement and roofline lend the car a sportier posture without compromising cabin comfort. From curbside, it looks lower and wider, but from inside, occupants still get the airy, relaxed vibe that made the ES a mainstay.

Two fully electric variants make their debut—ES 350e with front-wheel drive and ES 500e equipped with Lexus’ DIRECT4 all-wheel drive system. Built on an evolved GA-K architecture tailored for electrification, the ES feels more planted and smoother than ever. DIRECT4 continuously manages torque between axles for better handling, efficiency, and traction on a range of surfaces.

Early range estimates for the ES 350e point to 300 miles when riding on 19-inch wheels, positioning it as a viable electric luxury sedan without forcing trade-offs. The addition of all-wheel drive to the ES lineup further broadens its appeal, offering confident year-round drivability wrapped in Lexus’ familiar cocoon of calm.

Hybrid fans aren’t left behind either. The ES 350h returns with a next-gen 2.5-liter setup that’s more compact, efficient, and lively. Available all-wheel drive is a welcome addition for those in colder climates. Lexus has fine-tuned the drivetrain for smoother transitions and quieter operation, underscoring the ES’s long-standing reputation for composed daily luxury.

Inside, a broader wheelbase and extended body dimensions pay dividends in passenger comfort. Lexus leans into simplicity and precision with its Tazuna-inspired cockpit, featuring a central 14-inch touchscreen, clean lines, and fewer distractions. Split-screen capability, natural voice control, and wireless integration make the new Lexus Interface both intuitive and sleek.

Opting for the Executive Package turns the rear seats into a lounge-like retreat. Expect power-reclining seats, massage functions, and ambient bamboo accent lighting that adds warmth and eco-conscious flair. Craftsmanship feels intentional, not excessive—delivering quiet luxury with a future-proof mindset.

Safety tech also gets a major upgrade with the arrival of Lexus Safety System+ 4.0. Enhanced radar and camera systems improve responsiveness in real-time scenarios, inching the ES closer to semi-autonomous driving capabilities. Pricing and full feature breakdowns will come later, but Lexus isn’t being subtle—this ES aims to anchor its electrified portfolio with grace and gravitas.
