The 2024 CX-90 surpasses the CX-9 in size and dimensions, marking Mazda’s entrance into the electrification era and its first foray into the upscale market. Drawing inspiration from BMW and Mercedes, it incorporates fresh elements while maintaining its unique identity.

Employing a rear-wheel drive layout complemented by standard all-wheel drive, this vehicle platform demonstrates a cutting-edge suspension system that consists of a double wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension. These design components enhance maneuverability and deliver a remarkably comfortable driving experience that exceeds the ordinary standards found in three-row crossovers.

Mazda introduces an innovative strategy for both the base and high-performance versions, revealing a dynamic and potent turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-6 engine coupled with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The 3.3 Turbo variant showcases a notable 280 horsepower, while the 3.3 Turbo S model elevates the power to an impressive 340 horsepower. These powerful engines offer an outstanding combined fuel efficiency of 25 mpg and are supported by standard all-wheel drive capabilities.

Adding to the lineup, PHEV models provide an alternative choice with a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines a 189-hp 2.5-liter inline-4 engine with a 173-hp electric motor, powered by a 17.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, resulting in a total power output of 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Notably, the PHEV impresses with its electric range of 26 miles and an EPA rating of 56 MPGe, highlighting its exceptional energy efficiency.


Featuring a sporty design, the CX-90 presents a streamlined silhouette that brings to mind the Lincoln Aviator. It incorporates a rounded rear and an integrated rear roof spoiler, taking inspiration from its German counterparts. Setting itself apart from the front-wheel-drive-based CX-9, the CX-90 showcases a repositioned cabin, an elongated nose, an extended wheelbase, and a reduced front overhang, accentuating its distinct charm.

Mazda’s CX-90 displays a striking and commanding design, featuring prominent chrome accents that highlight the broad and vertical grille. These accents extend elegantly along the sides and across the rocker panels, emphasizing its rear-wheel-drive platform. PHEV badges positioned on the front fenders, along with vertical air intakes and large wheels, enhance its muscular appearance.

The car’s cabin showcases a wide array of features, showcased by a sleek 12.3-inch dashboard display. CX-90 PHEV models can accommodate up to seven passengers. In the second row, you have the option to choose either a three-row bench, a pair of captain’s chairs, or captain’s chairs accompanied by a center console. It is important to note that the seats in the second row have lower and shorter bottoms, which could potentially impact comfort during long-distance journeys. In terms of seating capacity, the third row of CX-90 can accommodate either two or three passengers, but optimal comfort for three individuals may be compromised due to limited space. Two adults can occupy the back seats, although coordinating legroom with those in the second row may be necessary due to the low seat bottoms that require a knees-up position when seated.


With an upgraded powertrain, the 3.3 Turbo S model elevates the turbocharged inline-6 engine to impressive levels, producing a remarkable 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The engine delivers a polished performance, accompanied by a satisfying and restrained growl, while ensuring seamless power delivery.

Despite Mazda not releasing an official disclosure of the 0-60 mph acceleration time, our estimation places it in the approximate range of 6.5-7.0 seconds.

In the case of PHEV models, Mazda employs a hybrid powertrain that merges a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine, generating 189 horsepower, with a 173-horsepower electric motor. These components are powered by a 17.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack ingeniously placed beneath the second-row seat. Working together, they deliver a remarkable total power output of 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.

With a rear-wheel drive platform, the CX-90 accommodates a narrow inline-4 engine, providing room for a double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension. This revered configuration, shared by esteemed brands such as BMW and Mercedes, enhances the CX-90’s agility, ride comfort, and overall stability. However, it’s important to acknowledge that despite its weight and ground clearance, the CX-90’s handling differs from that of a sport sedan.

During cornering, controlled body lean is evident in the CX-90, while the steering ratio of 17.1:1 provides direct and predictable responses, albeit with a slightly heavier feel than expected in suburban driving. The suspension admirably absorbs road imperfections, even when equipped with the optional 21-inch wheels. Mazda diverges from BMW and Mercedes by prioritizing a finely-tuned suspension setup over advanced technologies to enhance handling.

To effectively manage the vehicle’s body movements, Mazda utilizes Kinematic Posture Control (KPC), a software-based brake-based torque-vectoring system. KPC selectively applies braking force during turns, resulting in minimized body roll, increased grip, and heightened stability.


The Mazda CX-90 improves upon the successful CX-9 by adding more space, electrified powertrain options, upgraded luxury features, and an appealing design. It competes with Volvo XC90 hybrids, surpassing them in enhancements but falling short in terms of infotainment and safety.

The Lincoln Aviator presents a rear-drive platform and plug-in hybrid option, albeit at a higher cost compared to the CX-90. On the other hand, the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade offer attractive aesthetics and well-equipped features at an affordable price below $50,000, although their versatility is limited by V-6 powertrains.
