2024 BMW i5: Powerful electric option for 5-Series with 590-HP i5 M60 xDrive, alongside gas-powered 530i and 540i

BMW is introducing the eighth generation of its sedan lineup, which includes the 2024 BMW i5, a fully electric version alongside traditional gasoline models.

Significant increases have been made to the dimensions of the new 5-series. With a 3.9-inch increase in length, 1.3-inch increase in width, and 1.4-inch increase in height, along with a 0.8-inch extension to its wheelbase, which now measures 117.9 inches, the car showcases notable changes.

Its prominent and sleek appearance is characterized by BMW’s distinctive grille and a long dash-to-axle proportion incorporated into its design.

Customers in the United States will have a choice of five different 5-series configurations, all of which come equipped with automatic transmissions. Among them is the entry-level 530i, featuring a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine producing 255 horsepower, with the option of all-wheel drive.

Achieving a 0-60 mph time of 5.9 seconds, the rear-wheel-drive version offers impressive performance, while the all-wheel-drive variant accomplishes it in 5.8 seconds. Pricing for the 530i begins at $58,895, with the 530i xDrive starting at $61,195, and both models will be available for purchase in October.

Featuring a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, the highest-tier gasoline model available is the 540i xDrive. With a power output of 375 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, this performance can be further amplified by the 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Achieving a 0-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds, the 540i xDrive will be offered for sale starting in November.

Customers looking for electric vehicles can explore the i5 lineup, which presents two choices. Available in this lineup is the i5 eDrive40, featuring rear-wheel drive. It boasts a rear motor generating 335 horsepower and a torque of 295 pound-feet (317 pound-feet with Sport Boost).

Equipped with an 84.3-kWh battery, the i5 eDrive40 provides an estimated EPA range of nearly 300 miles, accomplishing a 0-60 mph time of 5.7 seconds. The starting price for the i5 eDrive40 is $67,795.

Presenting the i5 M60 xDrive, an electrifying model with unrivaled power, generating 590 horsepower through its dual motors. It serves as the successor to the M550i, which relied on a V-8 engine. With a starting price of $85,095, this impressive variant showcases a remarkable 0-60 mph time of 3.7 seconds and achieves a top speed of 143 mph (with summer tires) or 130 mph (with winter tires).

Charging capabilities include up to 205 kW DC fast charging and 11 kW charging on a Level 2 hookup. The i5 also features entertainment options such as AirConsole video games using a smartphone as a controller and a built-in YouTube app.

Available as an optional feature, BMW offers the Driving Assistant Professional as part of its driver-assist system. This comprehensive system incorporates the Active Lane Change Assistant, designed to propose lane changes for navigating around slower traffic. However, it is essential for the driver to verify and confirm the suggested lane change by checking the corresponding mirror.

Incorporating a double-wishbone front suspension, a multilink rear suspension, and offering optional features such as four-wheel steering, active anti-roll bars, and adaptive dampers, the new 5-series ensures an advanced driving experience. Additional information regarding driving impressions and detailed specifications will be provided as the launch date approaches in late September.
