Tesla’s 2022 Impact Report reveals that the Model S and Model X retain more than 88% of their range even after traveling 200,000 miles. Nevertheless, the report states that most Tesla vehicles in the US market are usually scrapped after attaining this mileage, whereas the estimate is approximately 150,000 miles in Europe.
Minimal range loss is observed among Tesla customers over the lifespan of their vehicles, according to the report. This translates to increased mileage covered by cars using the remaining 88% capacity, which is made possible by continual software updates and improvements.
Age is a significant factor in battery degradation, as noted in the report. Additionally, Tesla lacks data on newer chemistries. However, earlier data from 2017 showed that certain Tesla Model S cars retained more than 90% of their original capacity even after 150,000 miles.
While battery degradation is unlikely to cause an EV to fail completely, California is proposing battery degradation limits as part of its latest standards to encourage a shift to EVs by 2035. These regulations may provide consumers with peace of mind and ease the transition to electric vehicles.
