BMW to sell 29 limited edition M5s over Instagram

BMW is marking the 30th anniversary of its M5 flagship by rolling out 300 limited edition “30 Jahre M5” worldwide, with 30 headed to the U.S. and 29 to be sold through a social media contest, the company announced today.

This incarnation of the M5 packs 600 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque, making it the most powerful production model in the German automaker’s history. The 30th edition M5 sprint 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds and features an M-specific Servotronic function as well as an improved M Dynamic mode.

To get one of these M5s will take timing and some luck: Only the first 29 buyers who call a BMW Customer Relations hotline at 1 p.m. EDT on May 21, will be able to buy the car. The hotline number will be revealed in parts beginning May 17 on the company’s Instagram, @BMWUSA.

Each of the buyers will get an invite to spend a day at the M Driving School at The Thermal Club, a private motorsports facility in Palm Springs, Calif.

One of the cars will be kept at BMW of North America for now.

The M5 exterior features a Frozen Dark Silver Metallic paint and Black Chrome “30 Jahre M5” (German for 30 years of the M5) badges, which will be on the kidney grill surrounds, the front fenders, door handles and twin dual exhaust pipes. The car will also sport 20-inch, bi-color M light-alloy wheels.

The interior features include plush black Alcantara/Leather combination on the seats, embroidered with “30 Jahre M5” badges. The center console and the door panels are also covered in black Alcantara, while the headliner features Alcantara Anthracite.

The price starts at $138,275, including destination and handling.
