Lamborghini Newport Beach sells Tesla Model S for Bitcoins

The future of cars and dealerships is upon us, christened at Lamborghini Newport Beach: a Tesla Model S Performance has been purchased with Bitcoins.

Bitcoins are an electronic currency – fully digital – that allows buyers, sellers, and all transactions complete anonymity.  They operate with no middle man, no bank, no transaction fee, and no legal name; just open source person-to-person transactions. Similar to other currencies, Bitcoins are exchanged on a market, which allows their value to ebb and flow. The amount of retailers accepting Bitcoins has slowly increased since its inception in 2009.

And now, apparently, Lamborghini Newport Beach is one of those retailers.

As far as we can tell, the Tesla sold by the auto dealer was the first vehicle ever purchased with Bitcoins. And, true to the form of Bitcoin, the buyer (who is located in Florida), wished to remain anonymous.

The dealership announced the news on Wednesday, stating that they will be happily accepting Bitcoins as currency from this day forward. They also stated that they intend to transfer the money to U.S. dollars, saying that it was not an investment for them, just an alternate way to sell the car for what it’s worth.

So all you Bitcoin miners out there, head to Newport Beach and pick up a Tesla like this guy, who paid 91.4 Bitcoins, the equivalent of $103,000.

Of course, there is added irony in the fact that it was an electric car purchased with electric currency. Welcome to the future.
