As an elite luxury brand, Mercedes has never been about younger buyers or affordability. Spurred by competition, however, the German automaker has now reconsidered. Need proof? Take a peek at the new 2014 CLA 45 AMG coupe, which made its debut at the New York International Auto Show.

If it seems familiar, it’s because the all-new 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG takes its aesthetic cues from the CLS63 AMG four-door coupe, which, needless to say, is pretty awesome considering it costs half as much. Inside, the CLA has a sporty look with bright red stitching and seat belts, sport seats and performance vents and spoilers. Among optional features on display at the NY Auto Show were carbon fiber trim in the side-view mirrors, front splitter and rear diffuser.

The CLA screams AMG with a four-cylinder 2.0-litre engine with 355 horsepower. Like its eight- and twelve-cylinder engine siblings, the new AMG four cylinder turbo engine is hand-built according to the traditional AMG philosophy of “one man, one engine” on an assembly line at the Mercedes-Benz engine production plant in Kölleda, Germany. It’s the same factory where all BlueDIRECT four-cylinder engines are built for the A- and B-Class models.

Mercedes says it is “establishing a completely new segment” with the CLA as it did with the CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake last year and the CLS55 AMG in 2004. In a true Mercedes fashion, the automaker adds that “neither of these AMG models had any direct rivals, but went on to inspire other automotive manufacturers.”

The CLA45 AMG will retail for $48,375 and will arrive in dealerships in September.
