The long-anticipated reveal of the Chevrolet Corvette has finally arrived, and in style. Not only is it all-new inside and out, but a legendary moniker has returned: Stingray.
The seventh generation, or C7 as it is commonly known, is the most powerful base model ever, coming in at an estimated 450 horsepower and torque. The performance metric standard, zero to sixty, comes in at less than four seconds, and pulls over 1g in the skidpad. Those numbers place the Vette in supercar territory.
All of this is achieved with the all-new 6.2L V8, now named the LT1. It combines such advanced technologies as direct injection, Active Fuel Management (basically shuts half of the cylinders off in cruising mode), and continuous variable valve timing. Potential owners can take it up a notch with the available track-capable Z51 Performance Package, which includes the following must-haves:
- Electronic limited slip-differential
- Dry-sump oiling system
- Integral brake, differential, and transmission cooling systems
All of this is wrapped up in an exclusive aero package that is designed to assist in high-speed stability. Standard models feature more sculpted sheetmetal, compared to the previous generation. Carbon fiber graces the hood and the removable roof panel, as well as fenders, doors and rear quarter panels. Underneath sports a carbon-nano composite underbody, and under the skin features an all-new aluminum frame, which works in harmony to achieve the ideal 50/50 weight distribution.
Not to be left out, another important metric has also improved…the EPA-estimated fuel economy is expected to exceed the current generation’s 26 mpg (overall).
But what is the biggest improvement has also been the biggest criticism of the Corvette since the 1984 Corvette debuted…the interior. Not only is it all-new, but nearly every touch point is swathed in hand-wrapped leather and other soft materials. Otherwise, it’s real carbon fiber and aluminum throughout.
In addition, the Corvette finally gets seats worthy of its heritage and capabilities. Actually, it will receive two seat choices, one for the standard models, and one for the premium models. On the technology front, a five-position Drive Mode Selector that tailors 12 vehicle attributes to the fit the driver’s environment. The all-new seven-speed manual transmission with Active Rev Matching tops it all off.
The 2014 Corvette Stingray coupe goes on sale in the third quarter of 2013.
