The second coming of Audi’s acclaimed R8 supercar is the fastest and most powerful series-production Audi ever made. Say goodbye to substandard top speeds in the high 100s, and say hello to the R8s remarkable 205 mph.

Lightning speeds are achieved through a reworked high-revving and mid-mounted 5.2L naturally aspirated V-10 engine offered in two variations. Choose from 540 PS, or the superior 610 PS to go from 0-62 mph in a phenomenal 3.2 seconds. Partnering with the FSI direct petrol injection is an addition indirect engine that works to maximise fuel economy and enhance performance. An advanced chassis with quattro all-wheel-drive system, plus fully variable torque control, makes for a seamless driving experience.

Talking of torque, a 7-speed S tronic transmission gets the 19-inch wheels spinning like never before, with torque reaching 6,500 rpm. Divert torque manually up to 100%, or via one of three automatic modes, to suit driving conditions and increase stability.

My, what a stunning figure you have! The new R8 is a waif, weighing a slight 1,454 kg dry weight. The lighter and more agile vehicle is constructed around a sturdy multimaterial (aluminium and CFRP) Audi Space Frame. At just 200 kg, the frame boosts axle load distribution, while the all-LED headlights with laser spot high beam and dynamic rear turn signals offer optical excellence.

Completing the package is an electrically extending spoiler, CFRP fixed wing, optional sports exhaust and aerodynamic underbody comprising a long diffuser to maximise downforce.

Newly designed sport ‘bucket’ seats and integrated head rests offer performance-style comfort and the perfect perch to monitor stats on the freestanding virtual cockpit with 12.3-inch display. Drivers can bask in the iconic monoposto arc, while operating the Performance electromechanical steering wheel. The drive select dynamic handling system allows drivers to alternate between four modes for optimal handling and traction.

Upholstery options are twofold and divine, but more importantly, the Wi-Fi-enabled MMI navigation plus infotainment system is top of the line and iPhone/tablet compatible.

But wait, there’s more!

Audi have also announced the specialist high-performance R8 e-tron version with a structurally integrated T-shaped battery for an unbeatable centre of gravity. The electronically powered design utilizes a high-voltage battery and cutting-edge lithium-ion technology to reach a staggering 280 miles on a single charge. And performance? How does 0-62 mph in 3.9 seconds sound? Or aerodynamic drag coefficient value of 0.28? What about 462 PS and 920 Nm? With such flattering performance figures, the 2016 Audi R8 e-tron is upping the stakes in the electronic market, and no doubt making Tesla nervous.
