Where track meets street: 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R

Ford is once again pushing the limits of street-legal performance with the all-new 2016 Shelby GT350R, making its debut in the automaker’s hometown at the North American International Auto Show. It is one of 12 new Ford Performance vehicles coming by 2020.

The latest beast in the legendary Ford-Shelby stable is powered by a new 5.2-liter dual-overhead-cam V-8 engine, the first of its kind to be put in production from Ford with a flat-plane crankshaft. The naturally aspirate engine generates 500 hp and more than 400 lb.-ft. of torque.

Carbon fiber wheels and a stripped down interior combine for track performance for the street. Ford took out air conditioning, the stereo system, trunk floorboard and carpet to shave off 130 pounds from the Shelby GT350 Track Pack model. Most of these features can be added via the Electronics Package, which adds dual-zone air conditioning, 8-inch touch screen with navigation, seven-speaker audio system and turn signal mirrors.

The Shelby GT350R features a larger front splitter and rear wing and unique design markings. These include red-painted brake calipers, red pin striping and unique badging.

The Shelby GT350R will arrive at dealerships in the U.S. and Canada later this year.
