2015 Volkswagen Golf R announced

The Volkswagen Golf R is scheduled to premier at the Frankfurt Auto Show but the German automaker has released the car’s specs. The new R will sport a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine generating 300 PS and 380 Nm (280 lb.-ft.) and come equipped with the 4MOTION four-wheel drive system.

VW promises the “fastest-accelerating production Golf yet,” with 0-62 mph sprint in 5.3 seconds, which shaves .4 seconds from its predecessor. With the optional 6-speed DSG gearbox, the time is trimmed even further to 4.9 seconds, electronically topping out at 155 mph.

The R’s fuel efficiency is 39.8 mpg in standard model or 40.9 mpg with the DSG box. The EA888 TSI engine is adapted from the new Golf GTI but features a modified cylinder head, exhaust valves, valve seats and springs, pistons, injection valves and turbocharger.

With smaller loads or while coasting, the rear axle is decoupled, which reduces fuel consumption. Using an electro-hydraulic pump, up to nearly 100 percent of power can be transferred back to the rear axle if necessary.

The exterior of the new Golf R is updated with a new front bumper design and daytime running lights built into the standard bi-xenon headlights. Inside, sports seats with a cloth centre section and Alcantara bolsters are among the highlights.

No word yet on pricing or availability.
